New Hire Starting Pay as High as $49,850

Base Pay for Education
$38,750 = High School
$40,650 = Associate's Degree
$42,550 = Bachelor's Degree
$44,450 = Related Master's Degree
(Psychology, Sociology, Public Administration, Business Administration or Criminal Justice)

Base Pay for Non-BLET certified cadets: $37,200
Incentives will be added upon successful completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training

Additional Incentives
Up to $3,800 = Full Time Military Service
Up to $3,800 = Full Time Law Enforcement/Corrections/Probation Officer Experience
Up to $1,800 = Fluency in Chinese, Spanish, Vietnamese, or Arabic (Via Assessment)
Earn approximately $2,000 per year in Holiday Pay for Rotational Schedule

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: All employees at the Guilford Sheriff's Office must be a resident of Guilford County or one of its contiguous counties (Rockingham, Alamance, Randolph, Davidson, Stokes and Forsyth).

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Performs general duty law enforcement work in protecting the lives, property, and rights of citizens in the county, in serving a variety of civil court papers, and in serving all subpoenas and a variety of criminal papers in the Guilford County Sheriff's Office.
 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class performs a variety of law enforcement duties on an assigned shift. Work is derived from the requirement to protect life and property, to conduct initial investigations in an assigned zone of the county, to patrol in an official vehicle to deter crimes, and to apprehend violators or suspects. Duties may include: serving criminal court papers such as warrants and subpoenas; receiving and serving civil process papers such as civil and magistrate summons, subpoenas, notice of rights, and court orders. The employee is subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement. Considerable tact, firmness and courtesy are required in serving the public. The employee is expected to exercise alertness and independent judgement in dealing with unusual situations. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures of the Sheriff's Office and is evaluated by a superior for adherence to departmental policies through observation, conferences, and review of records and reports, and for the effectiveness of assigned duties.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
 
High school graduation or equivalent and demonstrated work experience to perform job duties, such as experience in local or federal law enforcement, military police, or other law enforcement settings; OR, graduation from an associate degree program with emphasis in criminal justice or related field; OR, graduation from an accredited four-year college or university. Preferred: Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET).
 
Special Requirement
Must possess the requirement for the employment, education, and training standards for law enforcement officers as required by the North Carolina Criminal Training and Standards Council Act and the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Council.

Supplemental Information

Incentives
  • Education - Starting salary of $38,750 for hires with a High School Education, $40,650 for hires with an Associate's Degree, $42,550 for hires with a Bachelor's Degree, and $44,450 for hires with a Master's Degree in Psychology, Sociology, Public Administration, Business Administration or Criminal Justice
  • Prior Full Time Military Service - $380 increase per year for up to 10 years of active service
  • Prior Full Time Law Enforcement/Corrections/Probation Officer experience - $380 increase per year for up to 10 years of active service
  • Military/Prior Experience are combined to a maximum of 10 years credit.
  • Fluency in  Chinese, Spanish, Vietnamese, or Arabic - $1,800 increase (assessment required)
  • Holiday Pay for Rotational Schedule - Approximately $2,000 per year
Applicants with prior US Military service, or who have earned an Associates, Bachelors, or a job related Masters/equivalent Post-Graduate degree will receive an increase in pay for either their education or active military service.
